AGM
At the AGM in July, Peter Picken stood down as Treasurer. Our thanks go to Peter for his dedication and support of the society.
Anne Budworth had kindly offered to stand as the new Treasurer and was duly elected. All other officers were willing to continue and were elected en block.
Following the short AGM we were entertained by Richard Churchley with a ‘Century of Popular Songs’ from the 1860’s to the 1960’s. Richard sang a variety of songs and we were all encouraged to join in. A very enjoyable time was spent singing the songs and reminiscing about hearing them on the radio and them being sung by our parents and grandparents and singing them at the Saturday morning cinema.
Who remembers hearing this 1943 song?

After the talk members reminisced over a cup of tea, before leaving for home still humming some of the songs.’

At the meeting on May 28th, long serving members, Ann & Brian Taylor, were celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. Chairman Gay Hill presented them with a special coin set celebrating the late Queen’s 65th Jubilee along with a Birmingham Workhouse Token.”

Our Membership Secretary, Ann Taylor, has been involved, from the start, with a project to transcribe hundreds of original documents connected with life in the Workhouse. Full details are available in the Members Area*.

Nottingham Trent University are holding another series of online Microsoft Teams seminars. They start in November this year & continue monthly until July 2024. This year they focus on the relationship between workhouses and their wider communities.
